Should You Really Replace Your Bath with a Walk-in Shower?
This is the question I get asked most before any work starts, and the honest answer depends on more than just what you want today. A walk-in shower is a brilliant choice for the right home and the wrong choice for others — getting clear on which you are saves you a lot of regret later.
The case for going ahead:
Many homeowners haven’t used their bath in years. If that’s you, replacing it with a properly designed walk-in shower reclaims floor space, makes daily use quicker, and is far easier to clean. For older homeowners or anyone with mobility concerns, the accessibility improvement is significant — stepping into a shower is far safer than climbing over a bath edge.
The honest trade-offs worth thinking through:
- If it’s your only bathroom and you have young children or grandchildren who visit regularly, think carefully. Bathing small children in a shower is awkward at best, and several homeowners who removed their only bath have regretted it once toddlers came along.
- If you’re in a family home and may sell within 5 to 10 years, buyer agents consistently warn that removing the only bath in a family home narrows your buyer pool. In an ensuite or second bathroom, it’s a non-issue. In a flat aimed at young professionals, also fine. In a 3-bed family semi with one bathroom, it can genuinely affect saleability.
- If you’re staying long-term and don’t use the bath, there’s little downside to making the change.
In the 1960s and 70s, semis along Ash Hayes Drive, Sunnymede Road, and the Youngwood estates had a single bathroom with a standard bath as the only washing facility. For families with young children, keeping a bath somewhere in the house — even if it’s a smaller second bathroom — usually makes more sense than removing it entirely. What Makes a Walk-in Shower Work Day to Day
Most of the disappointment people have with walk-in showers comes from decisions made at the design stage, not the finishing touches. The screen and the tile choices are what catch the eye in showrooms, but they’re not what determine whether the shower actually works.
Here’s what makes the difference in daily use:
- Tray size — bigger than people think it needs to be. An 1800mm long tray with a 1200mm glass panel performs completely differently from a 1200mm tray with the same panel. More tray length gives water more room to fall and drain before it reaches the screen edge. Smaller trays in walk-in setups are where most splash problems start.
- Screen height and width — glass that looks generous in a showroom can feel inadequate when water is bouncing off a body under pressure. The screen needs to extend high enough and far enough to catch the spray at the angle the shower head sits.
- Showerhead positioning — a fixed overhead rainfall head positioned correctly creates far less splash than a wall-mounted head angled toward an opening. Where the head sits relative to the screen matters as much as the screen size itself.
- Drainage type — for larger trays or wet-style setups, a linear drain handles water volume better than a central point drain. Point drains can struggle to handle the flow from a powerful shower, leaving water to pool on the tray.
- Floor gradient — the tray must have a proper 1 to 2 per cent slope toward the drain. Get this wrong and water pools, drains slowly, and dries in patches. This is one of the most common installation failures, and it’s invisible until you start using the shower.
- Glass thickness — 8mm is the minimum for screens to feel solid and resist flex. Thinner glass moves visibly when bumped, which never feels reassuring in daily use.
One more practical consideration: hard water and large glass panels don’t mix well. Big glass screens show limescale quickly. Regular squeegeeing keeps them looking clear, and treated glass coatings help, but glass screens are higher-maintenance to clean than enclosed cubicles. Worth knowing before you commit to a large open setup.
These are the decisions I’ll talk through with you on the site visit, based on the space you’ve got, your water pressure, and how you’ll actually use the shower.
Where Walk-in Shower Installations Go Wrong
If you’ve spent any time researching walk-in showers, you’ve probably found the horror stories — leaks appearing months after the install, slow drainage, screens that won’t stay sealed, and ceilings staining below. These problems aren’t bad luck. They come from specific installation failures that experienced fitters know how to plan around.
The failure points that cause most regret:
- Tanking before tiling — the walls and floor inside and immediately around the shower need to be waterproofed before any tiling goes on. Skip this stage, and the shower looks fine for 6 to 12 months before leaks appear in the ceiling below. This is among the most expensive failures to put right.
- Tray seal failure — the seal between the tray and the surrounding tiles is the most common shower leak. Done with the wrong silicone, applied poorly, or without proper preparation, it fails within years. Fixing it usually means removing at least the bottom course of tiles.
- Tray levelling — a tray that isn’t perfectly level causes persistent pooling on one side. This needs to be checked with proper levels at install, not eyeballed.
- Screen fixings — screens need to be fixed into solid backing, either tile-backer board or proper stud work, not directly into plasterboard. Without proper backing, screens move over time, the silicone seal cracks, and water gets behind.
- Access panels for pipework — any concealed plumbing needs an access panel somewhere. Without one, a future leak or repair means cutting through tiles and walls. This is a common regret on DIY and budget installs.
- Drainage assessment — the existing drainage may not handle a new shower’s flow properly, especially in older properties with shared soil stacks and lots of bends. A proper assessment before installation identifies whether the waste pipework needs upgrading.
A note on timeframes that helps set expectations:
A bath-to-shower conversion typically involves 5 to 7 working days of actual labour, but the calendar time runs to 1.5 to 2 weeks once you factor in the cure times that can’t be rushed. Tanking needs 24 to 48 hours to set before tiling. Grout needs another 24 hours before silicone. Silicone itself needs 24 hours before the shower can be used. None of those gaps can be compressed without compromising the install.
A standalone walk-in shower fitted in an existing shower space, where there’s no bath to remove and no drainage to reroute, is faster — typically 5 to 7 calendar days if new tiling is needed, or 1 to 2 days for a simple like-for-like swap.
Most of the calendar drift on these jobs comes from coordinating multiple trades. Because I handle every stage myself — plumbing, drainage, tanking, tiling, and finishing — there’s no waiting for a tiler to come back or a plumber to return. The work flows as fast as the cure times allow.
