Choosing the Right Worktop Material
Most worktop regrets start at the showroom. The materials all look great under spotlights โ living with them is a different story. Here’s a quick run-through of the main options so you’ve got a head start before we sit down to talk.
- Laminate โ the underrated workhorse. Modern thick-format laminate looks far better than its reputation suggests and lasts 10โ15 years with proper installation. The best value for money in most kitchens.
- Solid wood โ beautiful when maintained, regretted when not. Needs oiling every three months. Stains where wet metal sits. Owners who love it are the ones who do the maintenance.
- Quartz (engineered stone) โ the most popular premium choice. 25โ30 year lifespan, no sealing required. Scratch-resistant, but it chips at edges from modest impact, and the resin binder cracks under direct heat. Gloss-polished quartz shows every fingerprint, so most people prefer honed or matte.
- Granite โ natural stone, 30โ50 year lifespan, every piece unique. Needs sealing annually. The most traditional premium look.
- Sintered stone (Dekton, Neolith) โ the heat-resistant choice. 30+ year lifespan, no sealing, lower silica content than quartz. The trade-off is brittleness at edges. Specialist fabricators only.
- Corian and solid surface โ joins are invisible and scratches sand out. Doesn’t look like stone, but long-term owners love how repairable it is. 20โ30 year lifespan.
- Marble โ the fastest route to regret in a working kitchen. It is permanently etched by contact with wine, lemon juice, tomato, or vinegar. I’ll usually talk people out of it unless they genuinely want to live with the marks.
Short version: laminate is the best value, quartz is the most popular premium choice, sintered stone is rising in popularity for its heat resistance, and marble suits aesthetics over practicality. Choose how you actually cook, and if you’re not sure, we’ll talk it through.

What Happens Before Your Worktop Gets Cut
For stone worktops, the templater visits before any cutting starts. They measure the exact kitchen geometry and produce the file that the fabricator works from. I coordinate the whole process, and I’ll be there at templating to make sure the right decisions get made.
A few things matter most:
- Join placement โ in stone worktops, joins are placed, not eliminated. A joint behind a sink looks neat for two years, then becomes visible as the seam ages. A joint at an inside corner is structurally weaker than one across a flat run. I’ll talk you through where the joins should fall before anything’s cut.
- Sink and hob cutouts โ undermount sinks in quartz or granite require precise cuts because their edges are under constant stress. Hob cutouts allow no margin for error; a 2mm deviation can’t be repaired. I make sure the templater has the exact hob model before they start.
- Overhang on breakfast bars and islands โ stone worktops can cantilever up to 300mm without support. Beyond that, steel corbels are needed underneath. Easy to miss on a design drawing, and the kind of detail I check before templating.
There are smaller decisions too โ edge profile, upstand or full splashback โ and we’ll cover those at the visit. The more questions answered before cutting, the fewer regrets after.
What Separates a Good Worktop Install from a Bad One
Most worktop failures aren’t dramatic. There are details skipped on installation day that show themselves over the years. Here are the ones I see most often and the ones I won’t allow on my jobs.
Worktops not scribed to walls. Uneven walls leave a gap between the worktop and the wall, and a budget install fills that gap with silicone. Within a year or two, the silicone discolours and yellows. A proper install scribes the worktop edge to follow the wallโno silicone strip, no discolouration.
Sink cutout edges are left unsealed on the laminate. The chipboard core of a laminate worktop absorbs water through any unsealed cut edge. Within two or three years, the laminate around the sink begins to bubble. Sealing the cut edges is a five-minute job that’s routinely skipped.
Poorly placed or fabricated stone joins. Joins should be tight enough to feel almost seamless. A wide or badly bonded joint is the most common complaint on quartz and granite. The fabricator’s skill decides this, which is why I work with fabricators I trust.
Insufficient support for overhangs. Breakfast bars and island overhangs exceeding 300mm require steel corbels. Without them, the worktop is one heavy lean away from cracking.
Nailsea homes throw up plenty of these challenges. The walls in older semis around Nailsea Park have drifted out of plumb over decades. Period homes near Old Church Road can have wildly irregular wall profiles. Every one of these needs scribing, not silicone, and the difference is visible for the life of the worktop.
