What Proper Second-Fix Carpentry Looks Like

Three jobs come up most in second-fix carpentry: shelving, doors, and skirting, and each one has its own technical demands. Here’s what I’ll be doing on yours.

Shelving: Matching Fixings to the Wall

The wall type decides the fixing. Get this wrong, and the shelf either falls off immediately or fails the first time it’s loaded. Get it right, and it holds for the life of the property.

The first thing I check is the wall โ€” stud wall (plasterboard with timber behind), solid masonry, or breeze block. For stud walls, I’ll fix into the timber studs wherever possible. Screwing into solid timber is categorically stronger than any plasterboard anchor. Where studs aren’t where you need them, I use cavity fixings rated for the load โ€” GripIt, toggle bolts, or Molly bolts โ€” not standard rawl plugs.

For heavy shelves on plasterboard, I’ll fit a timber noggin between studs behind the plasterboard for a permanent fixing point. Alcove shelving goes into the masonry side walls, not the chimney breast plasterboard at the back. Bracket spacing matters too: 500โ€“600mm maximum for timber shelves, closer for heavy loads.

Door Hanging: Precision Over Force

Most door problems aren’t door problems. They’re alignment problems, and most are solved with adjustment rather than force.

The latch and strike plate need to align exactly; most won’t close complaints turn out to be strike plate position, not door size. All three hinges have to be perfectly aligned vertically, or the door will swing open or shut on its own. The gap around the door should be even, typically 2mm at the top and sides, with the floor clearance suited to the floor covering beneath.

Planning is a last resort, not a first response. A door planed more than 10mm per side starts to lose structural integrity, and once that’s gone, the door doesn’t come back.

Skirting Installation: The Cope, Not the Mitre

The single most important piece of skirting knowledge: external corners are mitred (45-degree cuts on both pieces). Internal corners are coped: one piece cut to follow the profile of the other. This is one of the most commonly skipped techniques in the trade, and it’s the cause of nearly every visible gap that opens up in skirting over time.

A practical note on those external mitres: 90-degree corners almost never actually exist in a UK house. Walls drift fractionally out of square over the course of decades. A proper job adjusts the mitre saw angle to match the actual corner, not cutting blindly to 45 and filling the gap with caulk afterwards.

I also acclimatise the skirting in the room for 48 hours before fitting (timber that hasn’t adjusted to room humidity moves after installation), and I’ll scribe the back of the skirting to follow uneven walls where needed for a flush finish.

Carpentry in Older Properties

Period properties concentrate every standard carpentry challenge into one job. Walls that aren’t square, floors that aren’t flat, original mouldings with no modern equivalent, and doors that have been adjusted by previous owners over decades.

Non-standard door sizes. Victorian and Edwardian doors were hung in frames of variable dimensions. Heights commonly run anywhere from 2032mm to 2134mm, with widths similarly varied. Every opening needs to be measured separately; buying in bulk to a standard modern size creates problems before the first door even comes out of the wrapping.

Original doors that have been planed by previous owners. Older doors have often been planed and adjusted multiple times to fit sagging frames. A door that’s no longer rectangular in cross-section needs careful hanging, or it won’t sit square in any frame. The job is reading what’s already happened, then working with it.

Original skirting and architrave profiles. Victorian and Edwardian skirting was typically 150mm or taller, with Torus or Ovolo profiles. Modern MDF skirting is usually 68mm or 95mm tall, available in different profiles. Matching original mouldings means careful measuring and sourcing from specialist suppliers rather than standard merchants. Mismatched skirting is one of the most visible signs of unsympathetic renovation work.

Lime plaster walls aren’t flat. In pre-1919 properties with lime plaster on solid brick walls, the wall surface isn’t a flat plane. Scribing the back of the skirting to follow the wall profile takes significantly longer than fixing to a flat wall, but it’s the only way to achieve a flush finish.

In Nailsea, this matters specifically for the period homes around Old Church Road, Silver Street, and the village centre, where original Victorian and Edwardian features are still present in many properties.
